Road Bike Frames

A bike frame is the essence of a road bike and  its strongest part. At the time of purchase, the bike frame should be your most important buying factor.

To buy a road bike frame that best suits your needs, you should look at the material its made from, its symmetry and sizes.

In the early days bike frames were made of wood and steel

The material a bike frame is made of is what seperates an expensive and professional frame from a regular run of the mill bike.

Wood and than steel were the first materials used in the manufacturing of road bike frames. Bikes that are made out of steel are much heavier than bikes made of more modern and expensive materials.

The designs of the frames have also evolved. These changes have been prompted both from technological advances as well as changes in road conditions. When roads were rougher than they are today, bike frames designs had laid back angles and a longer wheel base.

Bike frames made from alloy

A turning point in bike frames design occured with the introduction of the alloy tube. Alloy is a much lighter material than the previously used steel.

Bikes under $2000 are among the best selling.  These bikes usually combine an alloy frame, a  carbon fork, chain and seat. You already get a good quality bike for this price.

Bike frames made from titanium

For more serious bikers, the titanium frames are the way to go. For a great, tight ride, and a weightless frame, titanium is the material of choice.

Titanium and carbon road bike frames are a much more expensive option.

A top of the line bikes mixes a titanium frame with carbon seat and fork. This combination of materials makes for maximum comfort, while preserving handling and safety.

Road bike frame sizes

The first things to consider are the manufacturer and material of the road bike frame. The next most important thing to consider is the size of the frame you buy. If the size is not right, your ride will not be comfortable and can even be dangerous. While most frames sizes will fit most people without the need for adjustments, there are a few things to consider to determine the right size for you.

The length of the seat tube is the size of the frame.  Bike frame sizes are measured in centimeters. A good estimate for your bike frame size is 0.65 of your inseam length. You just measure your inseam, convert that to centimeters (1 inch equals 2.54 centimeters) and multiply by 0.65. Using this tecnique an inseam length of 34 would give a bike frame size of 56. If you are buying a mountain bikes you should get a frame size that is 10 to 12 centimeters smaller.

When an exact size is not possible this can be corrected by adjusting the seat height. The distance from the part of the frame that holds the pedals and cranks to the seat should be about 0.88 your inseam size.

A minor adjustment of the seat hight and the right bike frame size will result in the perfect fit.
