Shimano road and mountain bike compatibility?

Is the sprocket spacing on the cassette and cranks the same for a mountain bike and road bike?

Will a modern 8 or 9 speed cassette fit on a mountain bike hub?

Is the pull ratio on mountain derailleurs the same as road derailleurs?

I have a recumbent with mostly mountain bike components and I want to rebuild it with with all road parts except for the shifters which will be 8 speed sti trigger shift.

You’ll need to match these things:

1) Number of gears on the cassette and shifters;
2) if you use road shifters you need to use a road cassette, conversely if you use MTB shifters you need to use an MTB cassette;
3) You may use road or MTB derailleurs indiscriminately as long as they have sufficient capacity to eat chain and cover teh range of chainring/cassette combination.

Both 8 and 9 speed spacing for road bikes is 130mm while MTBs are 135mm. That 1/2mm difference between cassette cogs is why you need to match the type of shifter with the type of cassette.

My guess is the reason MTB parts are on your ‘bent is because of the wide gear ratios usually found on them… it may be difficult to find road stuff able to do the same.
