Mountain Biking Adventures in Moab, Utah   by David H Evans

Moab’s amazing surge to acclaim in the mountain biking community is equalled only by the extraordinary geological events that created it millions of years ago. The fact is, exactly the same geological events that created these canyon lands will in the end destroy it as time progresses. Luckily for us for us, Mother Nature’s sense of timing coincides with the advent of the mountain bike.

Slick Rock.
Should you be acquainted at all with Moab, you undoubtedly have heard or read about the Slick Rock Bike Trail. Slick Rock is a wonderful introduction of what this region can offer, but theres a lot more to discover. Like the majority of of the trails in the area, Slick Rock is definitely not “slick”. The rock formations provide superb traction for mountain bikes but they can also be bumpy making front suspension a major plus.
Moab is situated near to the banks of the Colorado River and is the jumping off point for recreational excursions of all kinds. The industry here is tourism, and consequently there are lots of restuarants, bars and lodgings readily available.
Probably one of the world’s hottest mountain bike trails, Slickrock is what a lot of folks think about whenever they consider Moab. In comparison with other rides in the area though, Slickrock is more of a riding playground. I am not saying that it’s not a great spot to ride. Actually, Slickrock’s proximity to town and unique landscape cause it to become the besr way to fully familiarize with the area. The fantastic about Slickrock is that you can ride it any way you like sticking to the main path or exploring any of ountless side trips. In either case, you will have loads of opportunity to put your skills to the test.

South Mesa.
From its four-way stop junction with Spanish Trail Road, this route takes the paved Spanish Valley Drive up to and beyond Ken’s Lake. A steep gravel road crests Flat Pass to parallel the Righthand fork of Mill Creek upstream a ways before crossing it and continuing the climb towards the base of South Mesa. A number of challenges keep this rocky route fascinating as it peaks close to the bottom of the mesa, then winds through rolling country over to Mill Creek again. the stream is forded three times in a stunning slickrock canyon before attaining the spur that takes you up and out of its canyon to Moab.

Klondike Bluffs.
The first few miles on this course weave through the bleached, clay hills of a clean and sterile landscape. Upon turning to Little Valley, evidence of life in a renegade band of cottonwood trees earmarks the canyon that’s the portal to a wide, tilted plane of slickrock. Once you reach this plane of white rock, you’ll see that it is jointed and fissured with cairns in many cases well positioned to mark the path ahead. After gaining a soil roadbed, the route nearly doubles back on itself as it climbs up to the Klondike Bluffs. The initial few kilometers of the route weave through the bleached, clay hills of a sterile landscape. Upon turning to Little Valley, a renegade band of cottonwood trees earmarks the canyon that is the gateway to a broad, tilted plane of slickrock. After gaining a soil roadbed, the route nearly doubles back on itself as it climbs up to the Miners Basin.

Portal Trail.
Right here is the deep end of the pool, the brink of mountain biking, the epitome of the sport, a ride only fit for the strong, smart and skilled–a place where others can test your skills to the limit. The surface is easily the most varied that can be found anywhere. The sole missing ingredient is mud and water crossings. You will find ledges, deep sand, loose rock, hardpack, slickrock, gigantic rock rubble, and every combination of these imaginable. This ride is incredibly dangerous! Regardless of the inherent danger from the exposed cliff, the Portal Trail is the emergency hatch back and forth from Poison Spider Mesa and the Gold Bar Rim in case of bad weather or accident. Two fatalities nearly closed down the trail in 1998.Here is the most challenging, gorgeous, and electrifying mountain bike ride on the planet. What are we waiting for? Lets Go!
